Awful news reports…

I was really rather hoping both Turkey and Pakistan would stay out of trouble for a while while I was away…. but that was obviously too much to hope for/  there was a bombing in Ankara on 28th May.  Two bombings in Quetta over the last week – one at the train station and one at an office block where someone drove a truck full of explosives into the building and turned it into a car park!!!  Things are not looking good on the travel advisory service since these latest rounds of random violence.  News today on Turkey and on Pakistan as follows:

Turkey-Iraq border tension grows
Tension is rising on Turkey’s border with Iraq amid speculation Ankara may be about to launch an incursion to tackle Kurdish rebels.

Turkey is continuing a military build up and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has refused to rule out action. Turkey blames rebels of the PKK group for a recent suicide bombing in Ankara and a landmine attack on troops. The PKK has been fighting for an ethnic homeland since 1984. Turkey blames the group for 30,000 deaths since then.

Airspace breached

Reports from south-east Turkey say the military build-up includes about 20 tanks being sent to the Iraq border. Turkey has an ongoing military campaign against the PKK, or Kurdistan Workers’ Party, inside its borders but the US has warned Ankara that sending troops into Iraq would only complicate the situation.

Last week two US F-16 fighter jets based in Iraq made an incursion into Turkish airspace that Turkish media said was an attempt to intimidate Ankara into refraining from any action inside Iraq. The US said the violation of the airspace was “unintended” and was under investigation. Mr Erdogan warned Washington there should be no repeat. In an interview with the private NTV news channel he said Iraq the US and Turkey should carry out a joint operation against the PKK.  `When the United States says that they do not consider a unilateral operation right, this could mean that we can carry out an operation altogether,” he said.

However, when asked if he had given an assurance to the US that Turkey would not carry out its own operation, he said: “We cannot make any concessions to this end.” Thousands of PKK members are thought to operate in mountainous regions of Kurdish-dominated northern Iraq. Pressure for renewed action mounted last week after a landmine attack killed six Turkish troops close to the Iraq border.

Two days earlier a suicide bombing killed six people in Ankara. Authorities blamed the PKK but the group denied any involvement. Analysts say with national elections scheduled for July, Mr Erdogan may feel the need to act strongly

Pakistani police in bomb arrests

Police in the south-western Pakistani province of Balochistan say they have detained 12 suspects over a series of deadly blasts on 26 and 27 May.

The attacks in the provincial capital, Quetta, left two people dead. Afterwards a gun battle between militants and security forces claimed another four lives on 28 May. The attacks come as nationalist rebels, fighting for greater autonomy, have increased their activities in the province after a year-long lull.

Gun battle “We have arrested a dozen suspects,” local police chief Rahmatullah Niazi told a local TV channel. However, militant activity continued across the province.

Hours after the arrests, a bomb blew up outside a government building in Kharan district approximately 200km (125 miles) south of Quetta. A day earlier, a gun battle between tribal militants and intelligence agents backed by pro-government tribesman left four people dead and at least seven injured. Both the militants and the pro-government tribesmen belong to the Bugti tribe. The fight took place after intelligence officials, backed by the tribesmen, moved to arrest a wanted militant in a busy market in the eastern Jaffarabad district.

Militant activity
At least one of the dead and two of the injured were bystanders. The violence – which first began in 2000 – reflects the recent rise in the level of armed activity after a 10-month ceasefire. That began after the security forces killed one of the rebel leaders, Nawab Akbar Bugti, in a battle in August 2006. Dozens of militants and security personnel were also killed in the fighting, which stretched over two days. The remaining leaders of the resistance are said to have since gone underground or abroad.

Analysts are divided over whether the recent incidents suggest a revival of militant activity or are just the dying breaths of Baloch nationalism. But local correspondents are adamant that the militants are staging a comeback, and will increase their attacks in the coming months.

Istanbul

I’m leaving for Turkey tomorrow.  I’ve got four days in Istanbul then doing a 21 day tour, then off to Islamabad to visit MD on the way home, which should be quite the adventure.   It’d be nice if they would stop killing each other before I get there… and pretty please… could you hold off your civil war/military coups until I get home again???  Thanks … that’d be grand.  🙂

I’ll be trying to get online and put some updates in here and check emails etc, but am not sure how regularly I’ll be online.  Five weeks is a long trip, I’m sitting here thinking I’m going to miss everyone!  Especially the rugrat.

God bless the internet

I got to catch up with MD today!   It was the first time since Christmas Day that we’ve had a chance to have a really good chat.  Sounds like he is getting along well, though I did  notice that he asked me about four times what was going on with everyone back here, so I guess he must be a little home sick…  probably a very little :).  While I was on the phone with him, we were chatting about the bomb that went off last weekend while he was out carpet shopping, which I originally saw on the BBC news website.  So I happened to flick over the BBC RSS feed to see if there was any follow up on that story… and I found this link.  🙂  This one is actually funny!

We had a good old giggle about the absolute stupidity of these guys carrying their suicide bomb on a pushbike …  😐   I was in such a good mood for the rest of the afternoon after getting a chance to talk with him … I just felt comfortable again.  I always seem to get a bit antsy when I don’t get to keep in touch with my few real friends on a regular basis.  Maybe that’s why I go to such stupid lengths sometimes to keep in touch with the people that really matter to me.

Explosion kills two in Pakistan

Police say they hit a road bump on the outskirts of a town in the province. Police in Pakistan say two people have been killed in the province of Punjab after the bomb they were carrying on a bicycle accidentally exploded.

Deputy Superintendent Bashir Ahmed said they did not know whether the two men intended to plant the explosives or to carry out a suicide attack.

Correspondents say Pakistan has suffered a series of suicide attacks in recent weeks.  The two men died near Chichawatni, 120km (75 miles) north of Multan.  There is speculation that there were intending to detonate the bomb at a large cattle market, which is being held in the town.

Down town…

Pakistani suicide bomb kills 15

Pakistani policemen inspect the wreckage at the bomb blast site in Quetta

At least 15 people have died in a suicide attack in the city of Quetta in south-western Pakistan, police say.

The explosion tore through a district courts complex as a court was in session, killing a judge, several lawyers and court officials.  No-one has claimed the attack, which injured dozens of people, police said.  Quetta is
the capital of Balochistan province, where for several years nationalist militants have been fighting for greater autonomy.

A severed head, thought to be the bomber’s, was found in the aftermath of the attack, police said.  “The bomber entered the courtroom, stood leaning against a wall and detonated,”  Balochistan police chief Tariq Khosa told AFP news agency.  Several of the injured are in a serious condition with severe burns.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said the attack was against the Muslim faith and against humanity.  Pakistan’s security forces are already on high alert, following three suicide bomb attacks in the region in recent weeks, says the BBC’s Rumella Dasgupta.  Despite the government’s denials, there are regular reports of Taleban insurgents operating in the province, which borders Afghanistan, our correspondent says.  Pakistan is under pressure from its Western allies who want to see the country doing more to control the highly volatile situation along its western borders.

So this is where MD is….. beautiful downtown Quetta.  These news articles appear in the BBC website with alarming regularity, and every time I see  them, it makes me wonder how bad it does it have to get before they send MD back???  So I send out a ping with a ‘There was a bomb?  You still with us?  and in return, I get a message saying he was about 200m down the street when this incident occurred.

I immediately envisage that his 5 man protection detail must have gone into overdrive, machine guns at the ready, yabbering on mobile phones, and hustling him out into a waiting vehicle, Mission Impossible soundtrack playing … deftly and efficiently manhandling him to safety  in a manner that would do the secret service proud…right?  No!  Not so.  Should have been something like that … but no!  Smart he may be, but common sense occasionally deserts our intrepid MD… he’s 200m down the street from a bomb blast to be sure…   but he’s out carpet shopping… without aforementioned security detail!  Yep that’s right – he’s out carpet shopping for lovely handwoven silk and wool carpets having decided it was a good idea to give his babysitters the slip and go out ferreting for bargains amongst the locals for the day.

Wonder if he’s going to come back from this posting in one piece at that rate!  🙂
