Apocalypto…

Went to see Apocalypto with HdM tonight… over at the Balmoral Cinemas where tickets cost the princely sum of $7.90 for a Saturday night session… back to the land of cheap cinema tickets and loving it.  The critics appear to be alternately loving it and hating it, but I certainly enjoyed it.  It was an interesting story, with a bit of something for everyone… romantic drama, groovy historical setting, action sequences, bloody minded fisticuffs, anthropological tidbits, cool makeup/costumes and a bit with a tapir to boot.  Not to mention… more tight brown butts than this cinema goer has seen on the big screen in a long time.   😀

Loved the cinematography and the gorgeous locations, and quite enjoyed the brevity of dialogue.   Mind you, it was a little on the brutal side.  So if you’re one of them people who winced and looked away when Mrs Marcellus Wallace got an adrenalin shot to the heart in Pulp Fiction, or when Big Russ did the two swords decapitation bit in Gladiator, this one might prove a little challenging through some of the more barbaric passages.

Come on now sugar…

Aside from doing horrid and tedious, but necessary, government job applications this morning, I’ve been finally catching up on Veronica Mars today.  Blogography Dave raves about VM constantly, and I was finally motivated to go find it in early December.  I was waiting to find some time to get stuck into watching it, but the Silly Season kept getting in the way.

Anyway, I’ve managed to see quite a bit of it now, and I have to say I love it … yes I know, I’m behind the rest of the world in figuring out that this is a pretty good show…. but better late than never.  Two things – Where did they find so many gorgeous people?  And thank f#@k my high school experience never bore any similarity to Neptune High.

Only downside of watching stuff back to back like this – I have that song stuck in my head all day ‘We used to be friends, a long time ago, We used to be friends…..’  Thanks Higgsy for the MP3 you flicked me today.  Hopefully if I listen to it a couple of times, when it goes through my mind, it wont cut abruptly after the 30sec refrain from the intro on the show!

Could be worse… last year after a particularly painful hospital stay, for reasons beyond my understanding, I chose to watch a couple of seasons of Gray’s Anatomy back to back over the course of about a week.  The result of which was to 1) cause me to question why my doctor more closely resembled Dr Evil than Dr McDreamy and 2) left me feeling like I’d been pummeled mercilessly by a very practiced and accomplished team of high maintenance professional drama queens.  It’s all together too much when taken like that – I totally overdosed on all that angst and drama I think and it left me feeling really drained… wont ever do that again..

Over the Hills and ….

Birthday thingy happened again today.  Big sigh.  What to do?  What to do?
Spent my birthday really kinda busy.  Went in the morning out to Carindale to try and sort out the little guy’s bank account –  Sunscum/Metway have been charging his bank account with a monthly fee, but being a minor, he’s entitled to a fee free account.  For the record, they wouldn’t fix it for me because I didn’t take his birth certificate – how remiss of me not to be carrying it about – even though the little man was standing right beside me and he is patently under 18!!!  But I digress, went to bank and to DVD sale at dreaded department store from hell – Big W.  Big W is one of those places I tend to try and avoid most of the time, because more and more, it seems to be the ‘store de departement’ favoured by the hairy and unshod.  😐  Anyway, nothing like a DVD sale to get me to over come my distaste for mixing with the unwashed hoardes.

Catalogue – promising…. tables and tables of DVDs laid out – likewise promising….  smallish crowd, predominantly with shoes – very promising!  But alas, looks can be deceiving!  I set out lured by a flashy catalogue filled with cheap classic films on DVD only to find …. nothing that I wanted!  Absolutely none of the titles I wanted was available.  The pimpled little guy stacking the shelves assured me there was heaps of stock, and a lot of it wasn’t on the shelves yet, and there was much more to arrive still.  So I should come back some other time – so bit of a waste of time there.

*Update from tomorrow :  I did come back some other time… only to be told I should have been there yesterday – described above – because they had sold out of the titles that I was after by lunchtime!  Stupid people have no idea what the f#%k they are selling!!!  Grrrrr!!  More time wasted and Big W firmly put back on the no-go list. I love you Audrey but not enough for a third take.

After somewhat abortive shopping trip I went to see my folks for a bit, then came home to have picnic lunch (that was supposed to be at Mt Cootha but was changed to my place due to oppressive heat and threat of rain) with BigSal, FishyBob & Widget and Bubble and Zygote.  So we had a fun lunch, the kids ran amok! amok! amok! amok! amok! – much noise, much sitting about complaining about the heat.  Cool B-I-L also dropped by.

Late in the day, having realized a play date for the kids wasn’t really my idea of a special happenin’ birthday treat!  :S  I decided that sangria was in order – lots of it – jugs and jugs of it!  Ah… sangria…. reminds me of being back on the SS Silly Bitch sailing the Greek Islands, sunbaking, eating out in quaint little Greek fishing villages, and trying to consume the bulk sangria we’d made that was more like rocket fuel!

So we threw together a gang of fun peoples to talk with and headed out to Montezumas at the last minute.  We managed to round up HdM, Surly, Bubble, MissCL, NMdG and Jimbo and headed out to Montezumas which was fun.  Only blight – silly wait staff didn’t turn on the AC in our little private dining room, so we sweated through our meals.  Needless to say, we didn’t dwardle over desserts, and split there pronto for Frozen Cokes on the way home.  All up – a busy, and interesting day!

I can’t stand the pain…

I went for a massage yesterday… cos that is what you do when you back has been screaming at you in technicolour for a few weeks.

Stupid move.  😐

I felt great when I walked out of there, and felt pretty good while having lunch with BigSal, even felt fine while I was out Op Shopping for a frock for HdM to wear to the Dirty 30s party.  Got home, hung out with the little guy for a bit, fixed a bit of dinner, went out to see the Queen with BigSal and CookieMistress, had coffees across the street at the Citrus Cafe, came home, went to sleep……. and then …..  woke up this morning feeling like I’ve been beaten to a pulp by someone with small pointy hands in my sleep!  😐

My back literally feels bruised, and if I could turn my neck well enough to have a look in the mirror I fully expect to be all black and blue!  Normally the pain just hangs about in the joints and the muscles, but at the moment, OMG, I feel positively battered….. I mean my back hurts if I so much as lean against my chair back!

Most people don’t understand what it’s like….. waking up in pain…… trying to go about your day in pain…. doing your best to ignore the pain…… and then trying to get to sleep at night and the pain is still there.  I can’t remember the last time I woke up feeling refreshed…. in fact I’d like to wake up just one morning and the first thing I’m aware of is something other than the fact that my back is still hurting.

I used to take a ridiculous amount of drugs every day to try and stay on top of it all, but I hated going about feeling dopey.  Analgesics for the pain, sedatives for the insomnia, anti-inflamatorys for the muscle spasm, anti-depressants to combat the depressant natures of the analgesics and the sedatives!  Not to mention the non-prescription stuff I used to chuck down on top of all that when it seemed to be not working so good. I was a veritable walking pharmacy and popping so many pills I rattled.  The result of all this, left me feeling more than a little dazed half the time.   So after getting off all that shite, I’m certainly more alert, but comes with a downside… I’m often short tempered, ill humored and have little or no patience.

So today, feeling well and truly stirred up and not in the best of moods, I think it’s a perfect day to put my best foot forward and find that perfect job!
