Necessity or luxury?

I went out this afternoon and bought me a noooo mattress!

And not just any new mattress – a top of the line, high falutin’ , brush suede quilted, 180mm latex cored, low partner disturbance, cashmere and wool padded, fancy pants mattress from Hell!

Actually I can’t back that up…. it’s from Nundah.

And even though it was way too expensive and I am now really really broke … I am looking forward to receiving it on Thursday. 🙂 I can almost taste the painfree sleep now! 😛

Zelda corrupts entirely..

The only downside of being away for the weekend is missing Angel.  I miss my daily Angel cuddles, and I miss his little smiles in the morning, and I really miss his cute little voice.  So when I came home tonight and was so looking forward to seeing him and having a catch up chat to hear what silly things he had been up to for the weekend … I was quite disconcerted when he had nothing to talk to me about except his GameCube.  He’s been a pretty avid little Zelda fan, but lately he’s been a little on the obsessed side about the whole GameCube thing … and it seems to be getting worse… a lot worse.   I was quite literally unable to get any conversation out of him tonight other than stuff about his GameCube – it was all he wanted to talk about.  Even after I asked him multiple leading questions and then told him repeatedly that I didn’t want to talk about the silly GameCube.   He’s only allowed to play with it on weekends nowadays, as I think it probably distracts him when he’s at school – he’s certainly got a short attention span for things that don’t stimulate him as much as video games do – which is a real worry in itself.

Sigh.. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised at his slightly compulsive behaviour considering I acknowledge I have a number of compulsive behaviours myself.  I am just not sure what to do about it… I would prefer to deal with the dilemma by throwing the damn thing in the bin.  But it seems a bit unnecessarily cruel to get rid of his favourite solitary pursuit given that he’s an only child, and has no one to play with most of the time.

I am wondering how you teach a small child moderation…

Northern Beaches

Had a dreadful night’s sleep.  I was beginning to think – Yep I know why Bluddy Mary loves living in this part of Sydney so much… nice cafes, close to the beach, cool sea breezes, and plenty of surfer eye candy to be had while sitting on the patio of a trendy cafe sipping a civilized chai latte…..  BUT!!  Last night, some of the neighbours were having a rather noisy get together that literally lasted until day break.  They were all hanging about on their verandah smoking and drinking and it went on all night – their voices echoing around the buildings, waking me up whenever one of them laughed a little loud.  So I had a dreadful night’s sleep and gave up around 0515 – nothing like a sleep in on your weekend away.

Anyway, when the others got up – we went for brekkie at yet another trendy Dee Why beach hang out – Stella Blu – all this eating out makes me feel like I am going to have to be rolled onto the plane tonight.  After brekkie we went shopping down at Warringah Mall to look for some perfectly impractical shoes that would make Dita von Teese green.  Didn’t manage to find any cool shoes, but picked up some groovy stationery and some bits and bobs to bring home.

I also found what I think might be the most unpolitically correct book ever – “Where’s Bin Laden” in the Where’s Wally genre.  Appalling – but fuckin’ funny… so naturally I had to buy that for some entertainment on the flight home home.

the Bloo Mountains continued…

This morning saw me snuggling under my possum wrap with a nice cuppa tea reading a random (left behind in the guesthouse – cos no one would really want to own it) book that I found on the bookcase waiting for the others to wake up in our pretty little rooms in the West Wing at Hurlstone.  After a quick brekkie, we went for the obligatory drive down to Echo Point in Katoomba and did the obligatory oohs and ahhs at the pretty view over the mountains.

After that we took a stop at the Norman Lindsay Gallery, which was really quite interesting.  I’m not normally one for water colours, and nor am I normally a fan of Australian art.  But I have to admit, I found his work to have a certain appeal.  Probably something to do with the mythyological inspired subject matter, and the nudity… gotta love a bit of gratuitous nudity in your art yeah?  🙂    I particularly liked this painting of Don Quixote, and nearly picked up a print of it… but prints of watercolours just don’t have the same luscious depth that the originals do.

After the gallery – we had a quick and uneventful trip back to Sydney and then a quiet afternoon pottering around before heading out to dinner at a place called the Sandbar, at Dee Why Beach, where we giggled like teenagers, drank expensive cocktails and couldn’t say no to the creme brulee !!! 🙂

Didn’t we have a lovely time the day we went to….

the Bloo Mountains!!!  Okay – doesn’t rhyme with Bangor – but it’s all I got.

We got up bright and early – brighter and earlier then one might prefer when on a break, but so be it – and went down to Dee Why beach front for some brekkie in a cool little cafe (the name of which escapes me) before driving out to the Bloo Mountains to have a look-see and spend the night at a pretty little B&B called Hurlstone.  Driving in Sydney is always a bit of a challenge – mostly cos I have no idea where I am going, and drivers there seem to feel the need to race off from the lights constantly – even if they can see the next red light in front of them – weird.   Anyway the drive was well worth it – Leura is a quaint little town all geared up for the tourists and reminds me of Montville.  Lots of crafty little shops – all that shabby chic nonsense, but also loaded with cool little gourmet delis and woodworking shops and excellent cafes etc.

We had dinner tonight at a cute little restaurant in Leura called the Post Office Restaurant – which as the name suggests was built in the old Post Office.  Bluddy Mary had a very unusual chicken dish – breast marinated in bourbon with a red wine and mustard sauce, which I had a tiny taste of, and immediately wished I had ordered! 🙂  We had a fun night full of reminiscing about our European Grand Tour way back in ’95 and also spurred on by the interesting artworks by Tanya Loviz that decorated the walls.
