US marine charged over Japan rape

A US marine is to face court martial after being accused of raping a 14-year-old girl on the Japanese island of Okinawa, the US military says.  Staff Sergeant Tyrone Hadnott, 38, was first arrested for the offence by police in February. He was released by Japanese prosecutors after the girl dropped the case. Sgt Hadnott has been charged under the US military justice code “as a result of a Marine Corps investigation”. No date was set for the hearing.

He is charged with rape, abusive sexual contact with a child under 16, and kidnapping through inveigling.

The allegations of rape in February caused outrage in Japan

The case has already caused outrage in Japan, and led to calls for stricter discipline on US troops.  More than 40,000 American troops are stationed in Japan under a security treaty, about half of them on the southern island of Okinawa.  In a separate case, four other marines are facing a court martial over the alleged rape of a Japanese woman last year.  Soon after Sgt Hadnott’s arrest on 11 February, Japanese police said he had admitted forcing the girl down and kissing her, but that he denied the rape.

While a kidnap and rape case is rarely amusing, I am slightly tickled that the word ‘inveigle’ appears to be a legal term.  As far as I was aware… ‘to inviegle’ meant to sweet talk somebody  ?!?!

in·vei·gle    [in-vey-guhl, vee]
 – to entice, lure, or ensnare by flattery or artful talk or inducements
 – to acquire, win, or obtain by beguiling talk or methods

Clutter-fuck.

What is it with shrinks and their dogs?   I went to a TrickCyclist today who works from the downstairs of her house and there was a huge smelly black labrador laying under her desk.  Not only was there a dog under her desk, but her ‘office’ and I use the term loosely seemed to double as a media room with a couch and big screen TV and also served purpose as  home gym with treadmill, exercise bike and weight bench too.  There were Schmackos on her desk and stuff piled on every available surface.  A rack of Yoga DVDs and home made art works hanging on the walls.  The whole room smelled like wet dog and there was knick knacks and ornaments all over the place.  There was so much to look at in the room that I found it hard to concentrate on what the TrickCyclist was saying.

If a messy desk is supposedly a sign of a creative mind then this woman must have been Pieter Breugel in a former life.  I’ve never seen so much junk ad clutter in one place.  There were piles of National Geographic in one corner, manilla folders full of various papers all stacked  high in another, two ceramic candelabra on a sideboard (one intact and one broken), old maps of Vietnam on the back of the door, a well used yellow pages holding up a broken coffee table leg, a couch that was covered in rugs that were covered in cat hair, a fish tank so grotty you couldn’t see the fish, old photos c1920ish in frames on the TV cabinet, a bookcase crammed full with psychology texts and yoga and relaxation books, turkish style rugs on the floor that were covered in stains and even when Digger the labrador got up and left from under the desk… the wet dog smell remained.

But in spite of all this clutter that made me feel dreadfully uncomfortable… the one thing that kept disturbingly drawing my eye and convinced me that there was something seriously ‘wrong’ with this woman was the copy of The Russian Ark that was on top of her DVD shelf.

Why on earth would  ANYONE buy that movie?

Cookie wisdom

Auntie Mary insisted on having Chinese for dinner tonight… don’t ask me why.  It’s never my first choice in the take away food stakes, but we’re all so sick of pizza so I guess it’s not surprising really.  Whenever we do the Chinese thing there are two inevitable elements to the experience..

1) Mr K will always bring home fortune cookies and 2) ten minutes after we eat it… I will wish I hadn’t.

These are unalterable facts about Chinese take out at Chez Azerbaijan… and what I really hate is that I never get the good fortunes – mine always suck pus.  I’ve _NEVER_ got a cool fortune.  Everyone else at the table will be opening their damn cookies and they’ll be full of sage little tidbits (sage as in wise and judicious… not of /or relating to the shrub/plant of the genus salvia) that say things like ‘Romance will slip away if you devote all your attention to work.’  or  ‘The will to win is important but the will to prepare is vital’

And my cookie?  My cookie says –

Is it a sign that my persistent attempts to cheer myself up with retail therapy are doomed to failure?  Or is it a wake up call that my life is somehow materialistic and superficial?  Or is it (more likely 😐 ) a sign of my mental health right now that I’m looking for meaning in a fucking cookie!?!?   🙁

.

It’s official. I’m a nutcase… and a disagreeable one at that.

I find these things fascinating even though it’s probably mostly psychobabble nonsense.  I never put much credence in the results… bit I often can’t help myself and have to fill them in anyway.  Strangely I’m rarely surprised by the offerings at the end.
