Little bit geekier every day….

Yesterday I went and bought myself one of those cute little Asus Eee PCs…. I even managed to get a much coveted black one which – no word of a lie – positively turned the little sales guy green with envy!!! I’ve been having problems sitting at my desk with my back all stirred up the way it is, and so I’ve been using Yale’s laptop for the last few weeks so I can get use my heat packs but still do useful stuff like research the plethora of drugs I’m taking, read blogs, chat on the MSN, check emails and troll the internets to stave off the inevitable boredom that come from being laid up. I’ve been having lots of fun setting it, getting used to the OS and relearning how to type on the itty bitty keyboard. I thought it was going to be a bit of a bother typing on such a small keyboard, but it’s actually kinda nice to have a keyboard that’s been made for people with small hands, so I’ll be up to speed in no time.

Now I’ve got a little ‘puter of my own with a Linux operating system so no doubt I’ve probably gone up a notch or two in the geek stakes whether I like it or not. In truth the geekiness points probably started racking up when I took on the job with Goliath as a Wireless Broadband Consultant, but I am still happy to report that I remain totally ignorant when it comes to the Star type questions (Wars and/or Trek) and have never read comics in my life, so I doubt I’ll have to worry about ranking any higher than this…. 🙂

51% Geek
Scratch what I just said, I just popped into the code for that little banner to delete the advertising tag at the bottom of it and well…. you don’t get any geekier than that… I’m doomed. 😐

Never ending story

Woke up this morning and I couldn’t sit up straight 🙁  I laid there for a while, working my jaw and trying to get some feeling back into my hands before attempting to roll out of bed.  When I did finally manage to get out I found myself hanging onto the bedpost totally unable to move, my hands numb and my back causing me to moan and shudder in pain…. which is fine if you’re a consenting adult and you’ve negotiated a suitable safe word…. but definitely NOT okay if this if it’s just cos your drugs have worn off!!!!  🙁

Getting up in the morning has become a trial of epic proportions.  I can’t believe how much gritting of teeth and monumental fucking effort is involved in just getting up out of bed.  After overcoming the  seemingly insurmountable task of rising from my nocturnal recumbent posture, I stumbled to the bathroom and splashed my face with cold water (as is my regular habit), downed the nearest tablets and then went and laid back down for a few minutes, trying to remember to breathe as I did so.

It has recently been pointed out to me that I seem to have developed a strange habit of holding my breath when I perform movements that are causing me undue pain… difficult manoeuvres like rolling over, brushing one’s hair, putting on a t-shirt or perhaps getting up off the couch  :S   So after laying there for a few moments and the back pain not abating, I went to reach for some pills, only I couldn’t remember what I’d just taken in the bathroom moments earlier!

Get the fuck out of there as fast as you can.

This is where I spent my last holiday.  On my way home from Turkey, I went via Pakistan to visit with MD who is posted at Staff College in Quetta for the year. He’s set to come home in days… literally he has about 5 days to go before he ships out and comes back to the first world.  Over the last few months, and particularly since the Red Mosque siege in July, he’s been telling me alarming stories about bombs going off in the middle of the night and the stories have gotten increasingly close to home… home being Street 4 on the Cantonment.  We were in security lockdown while I was there, and I imagine that level of security pales into insignificance compared to what he’s experiencing at the moment, as  this is the worst  and closest one yet  – these actually went off inside the cantonment.  The checkpoints in questions are about as far away from MD’s house as my local shop, which is way too close for comfort if you ask me.

Suicide bombs rock Pakistani city
Last Updated: Thursday, 13 December 2007, 14:35 GMT
At least eight people including five soldiers have died in two suicide bombings in the south-western Pakistani city of Quetta, officials say. Emergency personnel at the scene of the blasts told the BBC that 18 people had been injured. They said the bombs went off near two checkpoints close to a military area on the outskirts of the city. Officials said many of the injured were in a critical condition and were being taken to hospital.

Bombings and shootings

“A suicide bomber blew himself up at the checkpost and a little later, when some civilian vehicles gathered at the spot, another suicide bomber blew himself up,” military spokesman Maj Gen Waheed Arshad said.   “This is the first time that a suicide attack has taken place in this part of the city,” he told a private television channel.  “There were two people involved in the attack.”   Maj Gen Arshad said that the bodies of the bombers had been recovered.   Officials said the area had been sealed off by the security forces.

Correspondents say it is not clear who is behind the attacks, which come just two days before President Musharraf is due to lift the state of emergency which he imposed last month.  The president argued the measure was in part necessary to curb Islamic militancy which he said was destabilising Pakistan.

The army has been frequently targeted in suicide attacks since July, when President Musharraf ordered troops to raid the radical Red Mosque in Islamabad that had been occupied by militants. More than 100 people were killed in the fighting, most of them militants. Quetta – which is close to the Afghan border – has regularly been hit by bombings and shootings.

Low-key insurgency

Earlier this year a captured Taleban spokesman allegedly told Afghan intelligence that the Taleban leader, Mullah Omar, was living in the city under the protection of Pakistan‘s ISI intelligence agency.

Correspondents say that there are regular reports of Taleban insurgents operating in the province of Balochistan – of which Quetta is the capital – despite the government’s denials.   In February, police said that at least 15 people were killed in a suicide attack in the city.   Earlier this month there was also a bomb at an Islamic religious school in Balochistan, which officials said killed six people.

Balochistan has also been hit by a low-key insurgency waged by Baloch nationalists seeking greater autonomy.   Two weeks ago top Baloch militant leader Balaach Marri was killed, allegedly by the security forces.   This has led to an increase in attacks on the security forces.   But observers believe the mode of the latest attack rules out the involvement of the rebels and that pro-Taleban militants are the main suspects.

B minus for the Bee Movie

Oh dear God, what was I thinking?  I volunteered to go as a chaperone on an excursion for Angel’s last day of school today and we went off to see the new Dreamwork’s flick – Bee Movie.  Eighty sugared up (and probably no small portion of them also doped up on ADHD drugs) screaming children and me there without my earplugs or a flogger to keep the little buggers in line.

The movie was a bit of a let down… no where near as good as Ratatouille (which I absolutely loved and have already watched at least half a doz times).  It seemed a little patchy.. you know didn’t seem to flow so good for some reason.  The humour was full of bad puns which naturally leads me to think that there must have been at least one dodgy Canadian on the writing staff, and the story line was just not engaging for kids.  Bees suing the human race?  The whole lawsuit concept is something that little kids just don’t get, so the kids eventually got bored.

There was also a really awful moment where Barry the Bee makes a joke about suicide.  Yes, suicide… I wasn’t aware that suicide is a big funny area for under 10s and it certainly had a few of us adults exchanging glances.  The joke was slotted in just after they’ve realised that they’ve cocked up the delicate balance of nature in Central Park and Barry says to Vanessa that they could always make a suicide pact, and then they discuss how they could do it.  What were they thinking?  Was looking around to see what the reviews were saying, and found this website of Christan Analysis of American Culture… monster raving loonies, but here’s their review.

Still, the animation was great and there was a fantastic scene when Barry is leaving the hive for the first time flying with the Pollen Jocks, where they burst out of the hive and emerge from the trees to be flying over central park and dodging in and around some kites which looks really gorgeous… lots of bright colours and flying motions.
